Muscat – The German football team will hold a training camp in Muscat from November 14 to 18 in preparation for FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.
Not only will it help the Germans acclimatise, but also give an opportunity to the Oman national team to play a friendly with them on November 16, serving as a dress rehearsal for their World Cup group stage matches. Germany will play Japan on November 23, Spain on November 27 and Costa Rica on December 1.
Salem bin Saeed al Wahaibi, chairman of Oman Football Association (OFA), informed that the association has an agreement with the German Football Association (DFB), in coordination with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, to host Germany in the sultanate before heading to Qatar.
“Under the agreement signed between the two parties, the German team will set up a training camp in Muscat, and play an international friendly against our national team on November 16 at 9pm in Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex Bausher,” Wahaibi said.
This is in line with the government’s direction, stated OFA, to support the efforts of Qatar to host the World Cup and welcome football fans to Muscat as an accredited destination.
Oliver Bierhoff, managing director of DFB, said that as the World Cup is being played in the winter, the preparation for the tournament is different from previous tournaments. “We don’t have much time. The players come from ongoing Bundesliga matches and it is important for us that they acclimatise to the World Cup region.”
Originally, Dubai was discussed as the location for Germany’s World Cup preparation.
