Humans continue to discover the past of our planet Earth, and now a group of paleontologists have discovered a new species of dinosaur that has been residing in a university museum in Germany for 100 years misclassified.
The skeleton was originally found in Trossingen in southwestern Germany in 1922 as part of the paleontological collection of the University of Tübingen, initially identified as belonging to a Plateosaurus, which are herbivorous dinosaurs with a long neck that lived during the late Triassic period.
But now a new analysis by paleontologists at the University of Tübingen has revealed that in reality it is an unknown species calling it Tuebingosaurus maierfritzoruman herbivore with many similarities to the long-necked dinosaurs known as sauropods and that lived about 203 to 211 million years ago.
The skeleton consists of the back of the body and this new analysis has established that many of the bones were not the same as those of a typical Plateosaurus. The bones on the left of the body were probably on the surface exposed to the elements for several years.
It seems that the creature sank in a swamp and died after being attacked by a predator, leaving a part of its body exposed to the elements, which is what has not been preserved. and a buried part that is the one that has been recovered.
The study revealing this new species of dinosaur has been published in the journal Vertebrate Zoology, via Dailymail, and shows that the first European dinosaurs were much more diverse than previously thought.
