Ex-Atlanta Hawks guard Dennis Schroder has finished the EuroBasket tournament on a high note, helping lead Germany to third. Despite his heroics, Schroder was unable to get Germany into the final but it is safe to say that he more than delivered on his goal of taking Germany deep into the tournament.
He had a strong case for tournament MVP with 22.1 points and 7.1 assists but alas, he was unable to achieve that. That honor went to the leader of the Spanish team Willy Hernangomez who was the key player in the EuroBasket title-winning Spanish team.
Still, given that the German team was ranked 11th in the world coming into the tournament, finishing third in EuroBasket is quite an accomplishment. They had to see off a determined Polish team in order to get there though.
In the final game of the tournament, Schroder shone again. He had 26 points, six assists, and two steals in just under 33 minutes of game time. He was incredibly efficient going 7-of-10 from the floor, including 4-of-7 from beyond the arc and 8-of-9 from the line.
The Polish team has a good defensive culture which they displayed when they eliminated Slovenia. It was on display against the Germans again as they forced Schroder into eight turnovers on the night. It did not matter though as the Germans won the game by 13 points.
Schroder showed a totally different level of experience to Orlando Magic player Franz Wagner who had been huge for Germany all tournament. Wagner only took five shots for the entire game but he showed his class with four assists and four rebounds. However, it was evident that Schroder was happy to put the team on his shoulders.
He has been fun to watch and gave Hawks fans a true point of interest in the EuroBasket tournament during a time when NBA fans have a very quiet off-season. Hawks basketball tips off in a month at home against the Houston Rockets.
